Diagnostic testing plays an important role in determining the condition responsible for a patient\u2019s suffering. <\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"types-of-diagnostic-tests\">Types of Diagnostic Tests<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>There are a number of diagnostic tests available, ranging from X-rays and CT scans to more in-depth tests. Here are some of the most common: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Acoustic Immittance Measures.<\/strong> These tests evaluate <a href=\"https:\/\/augustaent.com\/hearing-balance\/hearing-loss\/how-the-ear-works\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"447\">the eardrum and middle ear<\/a> and are used to determine which part of the ear is affected by hearing loss. <\/li><li><strong>Audiometry.<\/strong> This hearing exam measures your ability to hear different sounds, pitches and frequencies. It can determine the nature and extent of <a href=\"https:\/\/augustaent.com\/hearing-balance\/hearing-loss\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"403\">your hearing loss<\/a> and whether you will benefit from hearing aids or surgery. <\/li><li><strong>Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR).<\/strong> This neurologic test provides information about the electrical activity in the auditory pathway between the inner ear and the brain, and measures a person\u2019s hearing sensitivity. <\/li><li><strong>Electrocochleography.<\/strong> This test is used to determine whether there is excess fluid in the inner ear by measuring the electrical currents generated by sound stimulation, and can help with the diagnosis of Meniere\u2019s disease and other balance and hearing disorders. <\/li><li><strong>Electronystagmography (ENG).<\/strong> This test measures eye movements in order to assess the functioning of the vestibular system, responsible for balance. <\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.asha.org\/public\/hearing\/otoacoustic-emissions\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE).<\/strong><\/a> This test measures the response of hair cells in the inner ear when stimulated, and can indicate the presence of a conductive or cochlear hearing loss. <\/li><li><strong>Videonystagmography.<\/strong> This test measures eye movements to evaluate the inner ear and central motor functions.
