Augusta has lots of incredible live music shows. Whether you’re a musician performing on stage or a concert attendee, protecting your hearing is crucial.
Approximately 5% of the global population has noise-related hearing loss. Let’s take a look at a few important tips to help protect your hearing without sacrificing your favorite shows.
1. Wear Earplugs
Earplugs are the number one hearing protection tool when attending concerts. There are a few different options:
- Foam earplugs. You roll and insert foam earplugs into your ear canal, where they expand to block out noise. They’re inexpensive and disposable.
- Silicone earplugs. Silicone earplugs are usually smaller than foam options. They sit comfortably in the ear canal and block out moderate noise. They’re relatively inexpensive and reusable.
- Custom-molded earplugs. A hearing specialist molds custom earplugs to fit your ears exactly. They offer maximum comfort and protection, especially for musicians.
- High-fidelity (musician’s) earplugs. High-fidelity earplugs lower the volume without distorting the sound. Musicians and music fans use them to protect their hearing while enjoying clear audio. They’re a little more expensive than silicone options but make up for it with sound clarity and advanced protection.
If you’re using reusable earplugs, remember to clean them regularly to prevent infection or wax blockages.
2. Sit Away from the Stage
For smaller concerts, sit away from the stage and speakers if possible. You can still enjoy the show while protecting your hearing.
If you’re a musician, try not to stand in front of the speaker when performing.
3. Use a Decibel Meter
Decibel meters measure the volume of your environment. You can download one on your smartphone and measure your noise exposure. If noise exceeds 85-90 dB, take short breaks between sets to give your ears a rest.
4. Schedule Regular Hearing Tests
While earplugs, positioning and decibel meters can help you control some of your noise exposure, attending regular concerts can still strain your hearing. If you’re a regular performer or attendee, schedule a hearing test at least once a year.
