The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that adults engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity and two days of muscle-strengthening physical activity each week (2023). Whether you like to hit your weekly 150 minutes through a yoga class or a run around Pendleton King Park, you need to make sure your hearing aids stay secure and protected during movement. With a few simple adjustments, you can keep them safe while enjoying all your favorite activities.
1. Wear a Headband

A headband can secure your hearing aids in place during your workout. If you wear behind-the-ear (BTE), receiver-in-the-canal (RTC) or in-the-ear (ITE) models, make sure the headband sits comfortably over your devices without being too tight; it shouldn’t feel like your hearing aids are being smashed against your head.
2. Consider Hearing Aid Clips
Hearing aid clips attach your devices to your shirt with a short cord. They’re a great option to prevent hearing aids from getting lost or broken during activities like running or hiking.
3. Remove Your Devices Before Swimming
It’s easy to forget your hearing aids when you’re showering or swimming. Unfortunately, while most hearing aids are water-resistant, fewer are entirely waterproof. Before any swim, remove your devices, put them in their carrying case and place them in a safe, dry location. Don’t put your hearing aids back in your ears until your ears are completely dry.
4. Clean Your Hearing Aids
Aerobic exercise can leave you pretty sweaty. While sweat is unlikely to damage your water-resistant or waterproof hearing aids, it can leave your devices grimy. After your workout, remove your devices, wipe them down with a soft cloth and remove wax build-up or debris with their wax pick and brush. If you sweat heavily, place your devices in a hearing aid drying jar or electric dryer until they are free of moisture.
